Please remember the children in your prayers EXPLANATION OF THE PARTS OF THE EUCHARISTIC CELEBRATION A weekly continuation for your information LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST Eucharistic Prayer: The heart of the Eucharistic Prayer is the consecration. The Last Supper is recalled. The bread & wine are offered to the community in the same way Jesus did. The bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus through transubstantiation. Substance is defined by that which makes a thing what it is. However, substance can not be detected by the senses. Things that can be sensed are called accidents. Through transubstantiation the substance changes from bread to the Body of Jesus and from wine to the Blood of Jesus while the accidents remain the same. The Host still looks like bread, tastes like bread, feels like bread and smells like bread but the substance of the bread has changed into the substance of Jesus. The same is true for the wine. On the surface, one may think this means that the bread and wine are only symbolically the Body and Blood. This could not be further from the truth. Because the substance has changed, it really is His Body and Blood. This is one of the core theological elements of the Mass. There are nine different Eucharistic Prayers. Originally, there were four. After Vatican II, five more were issued – three for children and two for Reconciliation. Recently four more were issued.
